Review Of The Ring Trailer

The trailer goes along with narrative theory very well and supports Tim O Sullivans idea that all trailers tell the audience some kind of story, this can be shown in the trailer as the text tells the audience a little of what the story is about and telling them about the film. The diegesis of the trailer also fits the genre and location well, as it is very similar to the normal Ring trailer, and has verismilitude as everything looks realistic.Todorov'a theory of equilibrium can also support this trailer in some ways, however in the trailer the equilibrium isnt established so the audience dont know what things were like before the tape. However it can support his theory of disequilibrium ,which is the tape and people watching it and then dying 7 days later.
.Another theory that the trailer also supports is Kate Domaille:
1.Achilles- The Fatal Flaw- this is the tape killing people 7 days after they watch it.
2.Candide- The Indomiable Hero- the mum trying to save the son from watching the tape and figuring how to stop it from killing people
However Kate's theory (number 3- Cinderella- the dreams come true) isnt shown in the trailer, it is left as a cliff hanger for the audience to watch the film to be able to figure out for themselves whether the Mum of the son will be able to save him and others from dieing.

Potential Story Lines

Today i have been thinking of potential story lines of what i can base the horror trailer on.I used the scanner to scan in the ideas.

Skills Audit

My skills have developed in research throughout my AS year.I have learnt to look through RMA's and analyse them more clearly and thoroughly.I have also learnt to look at other things to do with my task and help me with my research.I have also tried to be more creative in my research so I can gain a better grade by using more technology.

Mrs D

You have made a really good start to the project Charlotte. Well done. Your analysis is detailed and you have started to use a range of technology. I would avoid using powerpoint and you need to link your narrative theory to trailer examples.

What I Have Learnt About The Film Industry

The film industry is similar to the music industry is some ways, as the music industry has the Big three, the film industry has the Big Eight. The big eight are the ones who own the ten major filming studios and theese are :
1.20th century fox
2.Walt Disney company
3.Paramount Pictures
4.Sony
5.Time Warner
6.NBC
the film industry all works in 6 different parts which are:
1.Development
2.Production
3.Facilities
4.Distribution
5.Exhibition
6.Export
The most favourited studios and most rememberable in society today are : Warner Brons,Universal Studios and Walt Disney.
In the year 2001 the gross profit generated by the film industry was over £40 billion, and over 70% of the population went to the cinema regularly or rented films from shops like Blockbuster. However nowadays shops like Blockbuster have been closed down as they werent making enough revenue or profit to be able to run anymore, also there has been a decline in the numbes visting the cinema in recent years. This can be due to over technology that is creating this decline e.g downloading films onto computers or watching them on sky or other film channels for example Netflix. However the film industry is still popular and companies using horizontal integration have allowed themselves to develop and become more well known than others.Using cross media convergence the film industry have been able to reach out to different audiences throughout the population, it also allows them to advertise on a bigger scale as more technology is available nowadays.

Narrative Theory

I used power point to create my narrative theory research.

Some examples of trailers that follow the main ideas of the narrativ theory are:
-The Purge
-The Proposal

Analysis of a trailer-The Purge

I have been using movie maker to create my analysis of The Purge trailer.I think this is a good example of a trailer as it matches the genre of the trailer I previously analysed and tried to recreate.I also feel there is lots to analyse about the film, and even the trailer seems to promote the general conventions of how they work.

Functions of a trailer

A trailer has many functions as they are one of the most important parts of trying to market a film. They promote films in similar ways to how adverts promote other products. The aim of a trailer is to try and create immediate interest with the audience before the film is released in cinemas.Similar to posters trailers are often made in several different versions and processes. There can be 'teaser trailers' for the audience as this is created to excite the audience with a few details about the film. When the film is closer to being released they give out more information which includes the all important release date and the producers of the film e.g Warner Brons.

The Functions/Conventions:
- Including key movements from the film which arent placed in the same order as the film so it doesnt give away any crucial details of the plot as some trailers can be criticised for giving to much detail away to the audience.
-At the end of the trailer the title of the film is shown and it is then often followed by the release date
-The main stars that feature in the film as characters are put on early in the trailer, this is crucial as it lets the audience know who they can expect to see in the film. The audience may often decide they want to see a film because of the stars that feature in it.
-Sometimes the director or producer are included they can include phrases such as "From the director/makers of".

Analysis of the ring trailer

Analysis of the ring trailer

The Ring is a horrow and thriller genre of film, the purpose of the trailer is aiming to persuade the audience to try and watch the film and encourage them to see it in the cinema before they release it on dvd. Also there are other purposes for example trying to scare the audience as there is a specific target audience that is aimed at the horror genre, I think the main target audience that are aimed for the horror genre would be teens or adults or if there is a certified certificate of age then it would be aimed at the certified age group or above. The trailer shows important events that happen in the film they are mostly the important and biggest events that happen as the creators of the trailer will want to persuade the audience to see the film and they do this by including the most crucial and interesting details of the film, as they don’t want to give the whole story line away to the audience. The music or sound track that goes with the trailer is slow and paced it then gradually builds up throughout the trailer and gets faster in pace and louder in sound , which also goes along with the editing going from a slow to fast pace, this is to create tension for the audience and put them on edge as though they feel like that they are included in the scenes of the film and a taking part in it , this is a crucial part to the genre, style and the story line that revolves around the film. The text that appears throughout the trailer as the title of the film doesn’t appear towards the end of the trailer. It gives out important information to the audience who are watching the trailer of what the film is about, the charactes/famous stars it may include, the directors and producers of the film this could help the audience to make connections between the film that is being trailered and previous films which may have been successful, also the title and release date of the film.
Throughout the trailer there are many different camera shots and angles an example of this is when there is a point of view shot as though the audience are there looking through the persons eyes. This is at the beginning of the trailer when it shows a dark hallway using cinematography as the lighting of the scene is very dark and dingy with a green tinge included which makes the scene appear more scary and frightening for the audience. This creates a tense atmosphere for the audience as it makes them question why there is a door there and what is behind it the creators did this by using micro elements as a lot of attention is placed on the door with the camera focusing mainly on the door, it may also make the audience question who the point of view shot is from and why the person is walking in a dark dingy hallway towards a closed door.In the next shot there is a high angle point of view shot which again could be from the same character in the film that was in the hallway walking towards the closed door. The point of view shot is the view of a small boy watching a televisiom screen, this can follow on from the shot before where the text that appears on the screen says “there is a video tape, and if you watch it”. This makes the audience wonder what will next happen in the film and it then helps them to see a small feature of the story line of the film for example the boy watching the specific tape. This can give the audience a clue that the film is based on a horror genre as what appears on the telly from the tape the boy is watching is creepy. Throughout the trailer the camera blurs and goes fuzzy this is to create a chilling feel for the audience this can give conntations to the audience that something is going to go wrong in the film.Repeated shots in the film help to enforce the significance of the different events that happen throughout the film an example of this is the tree and the lighthouse on the beach, where again t he lighting of the scene is dark. This is crucial to what happens later on in the film as this is what helps the story to unfold and this is when the audience discover the story of what happens, giving the connotation the the lighthouse and tree have a big part to play in the film.

The ring that appears on the screen of the trailer multiple times appears to be in a white colour that blurs and flickers everytime is appears this is a signifier the gives the audience a clue to what the film is called as the circle shape is a ring, the fact that within the circle “you die” text appears can show what happens in the film if you watch the tape, relating back to previous scenes. This again represents the genre of the horror film as all the lighting is dark also horror is normally related to death and sadness. There is a lot of fast paced editing throughout the trailer where the audience only see quick flashes or glances of what happens within the film, these key conventions of the trailer are kept this way so the audience can see multiple views of different events in a quick and short space of time.

There are many sounds that are included in the trailer of the ring one of the sounds that are mainly heard is the blurring of the tape playing, also quiet noises of the woman screaming and shouting for her child which can signify her shouting to the little boy watching the tape, as she knows he will die if he watches it, this is repeatedly used throughout the trailer as it is key to the storyline and used to scare the audience and characters.

The location of the film and trailer is important to the setting and story line of the film , an island is included a lot through the trailer showing the location and setting that will be included throughout the film. The location has to be tracked down by someone who watches the tape meaning that they will die, however this can be used through iconography as the characters may be saved from dying if they find this location as it is featured a lot through the trailer.

Reflection Of As

AS REFLEFCTION

Analysis

In the trailer there are strengths and weaknesses.

The strengths that are shown throughout our trailer are good and I think it matches the real ring trailer quite well. The images (micro-elements) fit with the soundtrack of the trailer very well and make it seem professional and well thought about. We also matched and edited the scenes cinematography to the same or as close as we could to the real trailer, so it was very similar. I think we made the genre very obvious to the audience with the dark lighting and the background sound. The locations we chose to put into the trailer were also very good as I thought they matched the genre of the film well and gave a clear impression to the audience of what the genre was.

However there are some weaknesses, some of the text that appears on the trailer isn’t the same throughout and is different in some parts; also it doesn’t make the genre of the trailer very well. Sometimes there are some of the same images used a lot throughout the trailer, however this could be good as it will help remind the audience what is included in the film and when they watch it they will then remember these key parts.

What I have learnt

Throughout making the trailer I learnt many things. I learnt how to put the video onto the Mac computer. I also learnt how to add tints of colour into the trailer to match the genre of it. I also learnt how to edit the lengths of the clips, changing the times and the pace of them so they matched up to the trailer clips we had to re create.Putting in the soundtracks onto the Mac computer and editing them to fit into the trailer and be the same pace as the clips.
