Analysis of the ring trailer

Analysis of the ring trailer

The Ring is a horrow and thriller genre of film, the purpose of the trailer is aiming to persuade the audience to try and watch the film and encourage them to see it in the cinema before they release it on dvd. Also there are other purposes for example trying to scare the audience as there is a specific target audience that is aimed at the horror genre, I think the main target audience that are aimed for the horror genre would be teens or adults or if there is a certified certificate of age then it would be aimed at the certified age group or above. The trailer shows important events that happen in the film they are mostly the important and biggest events that happen as the creators of the trailer will want to persuade the audience to see the film and they do this by including the most crucial and interesting details of the film, as they don’t want to give the whole story line away to the audience. The music or sound track that goes with the trailer is slow and paced it then gradually builds up throughout the trailer and gets faster in pace and louder in sound , which also goes along with the editing going from a slow to fast pace, this is to create tension for the audience and put them on edge as though they feel like that they are included in the scenes of the film and a taking part in it , this is a crucial part to the genre, style and the story line that revolves around the film. The text that appears throughout the trailer as the title of the film doesn’t appear towards the end of the trailer. It gives out important information to the audience who are watching the trailer of what the film is about, the charactes/famous stars it may include, the directors and producers of the film this could help the audience to make connections between the film that is being trailered and previous films which may have been successful, also the title and release date of the film.
Throughout the trailer there are many different camera shots and angles an example of this is when there is a point of view shot as though the audience are there looking through the persons eyes. This is at the beginning of the trailer when it shows a dark hallway using cinematography as the lighting of the scene is very dark and dingy with a green tinge included which makes the scene appear more scary and frightening for the audience. This creates a tense atmosphere for the audience as it makes them question why there is a door there and what is behind it the creators did this by using micro elements as a lot of attention is placed on the door with the camera focusing mainly on the door, it may also make the audience question who the point of view shot is from and why the person is walking in a dark dingy hallway towards a closed door.In the next shot there is a high angle point of view shot which again could be from the same character in the film that was in the hallway walking towards the closed door. The point of view shot is the view of a small boy watching a televisiom screen, this can follow on from the shot before where the text that appears on the screen says “there is a video tape, and if you watch it”. This makes the audience wonder what will next happen in the film and it then helps them to see a small feature of the story line of the film for example the boy watching the specific tape. This can give the audience a clue that the film is based on a horror genre as what appears on the telly from the tape the boy is watching is creepy. Throughout the trailer the camera blurs and goes fuzzy this is to create a chilling feel for the audience this can give conntations to the audience that something is going to go wrong in the film.Repeated shots in the film help to enforce the significance of the different events that happen throughout the film an example of this is the tree and the lighthouse on the beach, where again t he lighting of the scene is dark. This is crucial to what happens later on in the film as this is what helps the story to unfold and this is when the audience discover the story of what happens, giving the connotation the the lighthouse and tree have a big part to play in the film.

The ring that appears on the screen of the trailer multiple times appears to be in a white colour that blurs and flickers everytime is appears this is a signifier the gives the audience a clue to what the film is called as the circle shape is a ring, the fact that within the circle “you die” text appears can show what happens in the film if you watch the tape, relating back to previous scenes. This again represents the genre of the horror film as all the lighting is dark also horror is normally related to death and sadness. There is a lot of fast paced editing throughout the trailer where the audience only see quick flashes or glances of what happens within the film, these key conventions of the trailer are kept this way so the audience can see multiple views of different events in a quick and short space of time.

There are many sounds that are included in the trailer of the ring one of the sounds that are mainly heard is the blurring of the tape playing, also quiet noises of the woman screaming and shouting for her child which can signify her shouting to the little boy watching the tape, as she knows he will die if he watches it, this is repeatedly used throughout the trailer as it is key to the storyline and used to scare the audience and characters.

The location of the film and trailer is important to the setting and story line of the film , an island is included a lot through the trailer showing the location and setting that will be included throughout the film. The location has to be tracked down by someone who watches the tape meaning that they will die, however this can be used through iconography as the characters may be saved from dying if they find this location as it is featured a lot through the trailer.
